Colgar Tomato Seeds
Product ID: colgar
Colgar tomatoes are Spanish tomatoes designed to be used throughout the Winter. "Colgar" in Spanish means to hang so the translation would be hanging tomatoes.
My neighbor introduced us to Colgar tomatoes because he had some hanging up in his lounge/kitchen. As we were speaking to him one day some liquid tomato fell on his head. So be careful where you hang them.
In the photo at the top of the page you can see some colgar tomatoes in the snow. This is in January. As you can see they are not absolutely perfect but to be able to eat your own tomatoes in the winter is an acheivement.
I don't actually hang the tomatoes up. I put them in a tray in an unheated room (which can get down to around 3C) This is the first year I have done this. By the start of January about 60% of the tomatoes are edible. I also put some normal tomatoes in a tray next to them and 0% of them are edible.
If you look at Spanish pages on internet there are people who say that they can be eating colgar tomatoes all the way through to June. I am going to have to look again at my storing techniques because I doubt if I will be eating mine after March. Maybe 3C is too cold. However I have proved that they last substantially longer than normal tomatoes.
