Maravilla is Spanish means marvelous. Maravilla lettuce are marvelous. If you buy lettuce plug plants in Spain they are almost always maravilla because they are the most popular. Many people consider that they are the best lettuce available. 

Almost all the lettuce I grow are maravila. They are easy to grow, have an excellent taste. They don't bolt very easily and they have to be very old before they show signs of any bitterness.

I grow them in blocks of about 30 lettuce and start of a new block about every 6 weeks. I don't normally dig up the whole lettuce I crack off leaves from around the base with my hands.  After a cutting the lettuce will rejuvenate in 3 weeks or so. 

As you can see in the photo they can also survive in cold weather and they are perfectly OK down to minus 3 or 4 . After returning to my farm to go into lock down on March 14th 2020. It took a bout 6 weeks to get the first lettuce from the seeds I planted. I have been eating maravilla lettuce continuously ever since and now it is January 1st 2020. As I eat a lot of lettuce and I always have a salad with my mail meal I reckon this has been saving me 50 cents a day. 

By the way in the 6 weeks I was waiting for the first of my  lettuce to become available I experimented with a lot of alternatives such as young broccoli leaves, wild rocket and other foraged leaves. They were interesting but you can't beat really good lettuce. 

In the summer we get an excess of lettuce. One of these days I will get around to making lettuce soup.
