During the civil war, a series of connecting tunnels were built under the city centre to protect the population from the 52 bombing raids and 754 bombs that fell during the Civil War. It is now possible to visit these tunnels which are over 4km long, and guided tours are organised to provide more information about them. There is even a small hospital and operating theatre to treat any wounded or sick inhabitants.
