Today I thought it would be interesting to weigh an egg to see what size it corresponded to. Since our first chicken laid its first quite small egg, I had always assumed that the chickens were laying medium-sized eggs. So I thought I would do a bit of research to see what sizes we really were getting. As a lot of recipes call for large free-range eggs, I had always wondered whether this was possible or not.
It turns out that eggs sizes and categories vary around the world. While US sizing ranges from peewee (less than 41g) to jumbo (over 70g), European sizes vary between small (under 53g), medium (53-63g), large 63-73g) and extra large (over 73g).
I was pleasantly surprised that our egg today weighs in at a respectable 65g – classifying it as large.
Sarah this is so great! I did not know you had a food blog going!!! I am going to get my mom to cook some of the recipes on here before I leave again!!! Hope all is well! Your food looks amazing as usual and I am glad to see that your chickens are laying large eggs!
