Weather update

snow1Since my post on spring having arrived, there’s been a sudden cold spell. It began on the Sunday and it wasn’t long before snow was falling, followed by hail, rain and more snow.

The temperature dropped sharply and we’d gone back into the depths of winter. The bad weather lasted for three days. Today we woke to sun and blue skies although the temperatures are still quite a bit below what you would expect for this time of year.

Spring is in the air

fig-leafThere’s been a sudden rise in temperatures and it’s unusually warm for this time of year. Spring is definitely in the air. Today at midday the thermometer reached 24ºC and the days are now sunny and warm and the evenings mild. In fact, we haven’t lit the wood stove for the last three nights.

I’ve noticied a sudden burst in growth in the fig trees and so I thought I’d put up a photo of one of the buds today.

Rain in Spain

The first rainy day in months

We’d been waiting for this day for a long time and the rain finally came on Wednesday. This is the photo of dawn that day and it wasn’t long before it began to rain. It was a welcome change and a good constant rain that soaked into the ground.

Almond harvest 2012

End of the harvest

This year we decided to invest in some specially-designed poles to bash the trees with. They are lighter and more manageable than normal sticks and at only 7 euros each, they we were worth their weight in gold.

This year we managed to pick all the almonds from the bottom field as well and at the moment they are drying on a tarpaulin. Luckily, we should be able to get them into bags before the rains forecast for this Wednesday.

Welcome to our blog about the cortijo. The idea is to write a blog of what we’ve done, planted, cooked, reared and eaten and to keep a record of what worked and what didn’t.
